The pass

Tiputa Pass is an oasis of biodiversity: barracudas, sharks, rays, turtles, and a community of 20 bottlenose dolphins residing here all year round, studied for 15 years.

The tides and the lunar cycle decide the time and the site. Never a schedule.

The Tiputa dolphins →  ·  Rangiroa Atoll →  ·  Tides and moon →

When to come?

Rangiroa dives all year round. What changes with the months is what you meet; what changes with the day is the time you get in the water.

  • All year

    The Tiputa dolphins

A community of 20 bottlenose dolphins lives around the pass and in the lagoon. Sightings are never guaranteed: they are free animals.

  • November/December to March

    Great hammerheads

The period generally most favourable to see them come up into the pass. Never a guarantee: they come when they come.

  • All year

    Grey reef sharks, blacktips, barracudas

They hold the pass permanently, facing into the current.

  • Every day

Tide and moon set the time

The favourable current window shifts every single day. That is why we publish no fixed schedule.

Tides, lunar cycle and schedules →

These are markers, not guarantees, and Rangiroa is not limited to these few species: rays, other shark species, pelagic fish and many other encounters are possible. We dive in a wild environment; that share of the unexpected is part of what makes this place rich.

The big blue

At this depth, red has been gone for twenty-five metres. What remains is blue: the water itself has eaten the colours, one wavelength after another.

« At Rangiroa Diving Center, we do not build our dives around a fixed schedule. We build them around the ocean. Rangiroa is a living environment in constant motion: tides, currents, the lunar cycle, weather conditions and the behaviour of marine life change every day. »
